Is the excess fat shrinks the brain ?

A study by Paul Thompson, a researcher at the University of California, suggests that excess fat may reduce brain size in the elderly, making them more vulnerable to dementia.

After studying 94 subjects who were over seventy years old, Thompson noted that the brains of obese 16 years seemed "older" than their slimmer peers. Their results indicate that elders with higher body mass index (BMI) also have a smaller brain, namely 8% lower than normal weight subjects. And that loss of brain mass occurs primarily in the temporal lobe and frontal lobe, with a major role in planning and memory, respectively.

Thompson suggests that with increasing body fat is more likely to be clogged arteries, which reduces the flow of oxygen and blood to the brain's neurons. The good news, he adds, is that strenuous exercise can "save" the same amount of brain tissue that is lost due to obesity. Their findings are published in the journal Human Brain Mapping
